International bidders welcome! Pioneer aviation!
For auction:
From Henry Woodhouse Archive, 1911 photo Howard Gill, favorite of the Wright Brothers Exhibition pilots. Gill made the world altitude record of 8725 feet at the 1911 Chicago Aviation Meet. He tragically was killed in a mid-air crash w/ George Mestach
at the Chicago Aero Meet. Mestach survived the crash with minor injuries. There is much about this incident online.
Howard Gill was considered one of the highest skills pilots at the time by his peers and was a favorite of the Wright Bros. for their exhibition team.
Period printing on front of photo: "
Howard W. Gill. Altitude Record of 8725 ft. Chicago Aviation Meet.
"
Period typing on front of photo matting: "
(54) Howard W. Gill, The Latest Convert To Water Flying
"
Mounted on period hard board. There are period markings on reverse of photo as shown in pics.
There is a great tribute article on Howard Gill in the September 21, 1912 issue of Aero and Hydro magazine available to view on Google Books. I found it by googling, "
howard gill altitude record chicago"
From wiki: 'Howard W. Gill (1882 - September 14, 1912) was a pioneer U. S. aviator from a wealthy Baltimore tea family. He died as the result of a night time mid-air collision with fellow pilot Frenchman George Mestach during a meet at Cicero Field Chicago."
Photo measures approx.:
4.75 x 6.5 w/matting 8.5 x 10
Please study the scans and photos.
