A superb photo taken during the Isle of Man T.T. of 1954. It is a really great shot of the great Irishman Reg Armstrong during this great classic road race.
Reg Armstrong rode the very special Gilera four cylinder 500cc factory racer. The Gilera fours were wonderfully engineered racing bikes, and extremely fast. Geoff Duke won the 500cc world championship that year on a similar Gilera four as pictured here. On the photo we see Reg on his way to fourth place in the 1954 IOM TT. He is seen in full action on Bray Hill, the part of the circuit shortly after the start/finish line. The 1954 TT was ridden under ferocious weather conditions. Ray Amm won the race after it was flagged off after 4 laps. Geoff Duke, Reg’s team mate, finished 2
nd
on his factory Gilera four. In 1954 Reg Armstrong finished 5
th
in the 500cc world championship on the pictured machine.
Even though the image was taken with Reg Armstrong on top speed, the photo shows great detail of both Reg as the mighty Gilera four!
