A superb and rare photo of the
1947 Harley-Davidson Servi-Car.
At the end of
1931
, H-D introduced the “
Servi-Car
“ for the 1932 production year.
According
a news bulletin that was released by HD on
November 9, 1931
; the Servicar was "Intended primarily for the use by garages and service stations in the pickup and delivery of customer's cars."
The
Servicar
also became very popular with many American law enforcement agencies.
The Servicar was a mix between a car and a motorcycle.
The frame and rear assembly were developed to act as one.
It was not just a motorcycle front with two rear wheels.
The distance between the rear wheels was with
42”
the same as cars.
This meant that also inexperienced riders could follow the path forged by cars in the snow and mud.
Original introduction standard color offered in 1932 was Turquoise Blue.
Many garages though had custom paint jobs with logos and phone numbers on the back trunk, which was large and flat and perfect for advertising. Unfortunately popularity for the Servi-Car slowly died as Gas Stations would not go to the customers anymore.
Also various Cushmans and striped down Jeeps offered meter maids and postal employees weather protection and a heated ride.
Thankfully the law-enforcement agencies remained loyal to the Servicar, as is also seen on this great photograph from 1947, showing a Police officer on the 1947 edition of the famous Servi-Car.
It remained in production until 1973.
The Servicar was an Harley that scored some interesting “firsts” and “lasts”.
It was the first Harley with an electric starter (1964), a 12 Volts generator (1964), an alternator (1966).
It also was the last Harley with a spring fork (1957) and the last Harley that was driven by a side valve engine!
