Description

A superb and rare photo, made from the original negative, of the great
Dickie Dale
on the magnificent and amazing
500cc Moto Guzzi V8 Grand Prix racer
, seen in action during the
Isle of Man 500cc Senior T.T.
race of
1957
, which was ridden on
June 7
of that year. Dale is seen taking the corner at
Creg-ny-Baa
on the
Isle of Man
Mountain
circuit where the Senior T.T. race was ridden. He would finish the race in
4TH
place. The epic race was won by Scotsman Bob McIntyre on the mighty Gilera 500cc four, before John Surtees (2ND, MV Agusta 500-4) and Bob’s teammate Bob Brown (3RD, Gilera 500-4).
The remarkable
Moto Guzzi 500cc V8
Grand Prix racer was by the famous ing. Giulio Carcano with help of Enrico Cantoni and Umberto Todero. It
was designed and put on the track by the ingenious ing. Giulio Carcano in a record time of only 8 months! In record-form the V8 later broke the
300 km/h
mark (
187.5 mph
). It was and still is considered a masterpiece of (motorcycle) engineering! The Moto Guzzi V8 delivered a massive power output of 72hp at 12,000 rpm!
Dickie (Richard H.) Dale
was born
April 25, 1927
. He was born in the town of
Wyberton
near
Boston
,
Lincolnshire
,
England
. He competed in the inaugural 1949 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season. Dale was a victor in the 1951
North West
200. His best seasons were 1955 and 1956 when he finished in second place in the 350cc world championship, both times behind his Moto Guzzi team-mate Bill Lomas. Dale also competed in the 500cc class aboard Moto Guzzi's famous V8 Grand Prix bike. His first Grand Prix was in 1950, the Swiss Grand Prix. His first win followed 4 years later when he won the 500cc Spanish Grand Prix in 1954. His last Grand Prix was the 350cc Nations Grand Prix of 1960, which was held at the Italian circuit of
Monza
.
The
1957
Isle of Man
500cc Senior TT
race was led by Bob McIntyre riding for Gilera and he beat the overall lap-record from a standing start in 22 minutes and 38.4 seconds at an average speed of 99.99 mph and was 0.6 seconds faster than the lap record set by Geoff Duke in the 1955 Senior TT Race. The main rival for winning the Senior TT race is John Surtees riding for MV Agusta who posts a time of 23 minutes and 17.4 seconds an average speed of 97.20 mph on the first lap. On the flying second lap, Bob McIntyre laps the Mountain Course in 22 minutes and 24.4 seconds an average speed of 101.03 mph, breaking the overall lap record and the first
100 mph
lap. The feat is again repeated on the 3rd lap at an average speed of 100.54 mph and the 4th and 6th lap at an average speed of 101.12 and 100.35 mph respectively. By lap 4, Bob McIntyre led the 1957 Senior TT Race from John Surtees by 2 min and 10.2 seconds and is only 9.8 seconds behind Surtees on the road. By the end of lap 4, Bob McIntyre passed John Surtees on the road. However, Surtees repassed Bob McIntyre on the road on the Mountain Section as the Gilera team gave McIntyre signals to the slow the pace. The 1957 Senior TT Race was eventually won by Bob McIntyre in 3 hours, 2 minutes and 57.2 seconds at an average speed of 98.99 mph. It was the longest race ever in Grand Prix history, even till today!
Creg-ny-Baa
means in Manx “rock of the cow”. It is situated between the 35th Milestone and 36th Milestone on the primary A18 road and the road junction with the secondary B12 'Creg-ny-Baa Back-Road' in the parish of Onchan in the Isle of Man. The area is dominated by the Keppel Hotel or Creg-ny-Baa Public House. The Creg-ny-Baa corner was part of the Highland Course and Four Inch Course used for the Gordon Bennett Trial and Tourist Trophy automobile car races between 1904 and 1911. Also, Creg-ny-Baa is part of the Mountain Course used since 1911 for the Isle of Man TT and from 1923 the Manx Grand Prix Races. To facilitate racing on the Clypse Course for the 1954 Isle of Man TT Races, during the winter of 1953/54 road widening occurred on the Mountain Course at Creg-ny-Baa along with Signpost Corner, Cronk-ny-Mona and the approach to Governor's Bridge.
