Description
A superb and rare photo ofDon Evans just
after
winning
the
Daytona
100 mile
race of 1948
on his
500cc Norton Manx
single.
Racing at Daytona’s beach circuit started up again for the first time after World War II in 1948. The Norton factory send Steve Lancefield over. He was the brother in law of Norton factory rider Harold Daniel and a famous Norton tuner. He aided the Norton riders that participated in the historic Daytona races. Don Evans’ Norton was tuned by Clarence Czysz, who is in the photo as well, standing behind Don Evans and his Norton. Evans’ Norton was basically stock, yet were fitted with kickstart gearboxes, which created a wide jump between 10-1 bottom and 6-1 second gear. The light alloy rims caught to much sand and unbalanced the wheels in the process, so they were replaced with steel rims. Both the kickstarter as the steel rims are visible on the photo.
Don Evans won the
100 mile
race
and participated in the
200 mile
race with the same machine. On this magnificent and historic photo he is seen sitting on the magnificent
500cc Garden Gate Norton Manx
, with the famous tuner of the Norton, Clarence Czysz standing behind him. The photo was taken after his winning race in 1948.
