    Description

Original photo postcard signed by Ernst Udet, German Ace of WW I, second only to Manfred von Richtohofen in the number of enemy combatants defeated. Postcard size in 3.5 x 5.5 inches.
I purchased this card in Spain about six years ago, and that's all I know about its origins.
The image is very rare. I was unable to find anything similar on eBay or the internet. Udet is pictured sitting on the edge of the cockpit of a single-wing, streamlined aircraft with a fuzzy background of some kind of a military encampment.
Note especially the insignia on the plane, which is the letter "U" in a pair of wings. Udet's personal insignia most likely, as this design is seen on other photographs, however, none so prominent as this one. Although I can't positively identify the plane it looks like a Heinkel aerobatic or fighter plane design.
The photographer is P. Hartlemeier of Munchen. I estimate the date as 1935.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks.
