Up for your bidding consideration is a Scarce Circa 1972 Vintage 14K GOLD Ladies/Women's "
POWDER PUFF DERBY
" Brooch/ Pin/Pendant. This Aviation Historical Award Pin was an Estate Sale Find discovered many years ago.

This Rare 14K Gold Pin was designed by Marion Andrews ( deceased 2011 ) who was not only a Pilot but a Freelance Artist. She is also well known for being commissioned by the United States Air Force to paint a series of Paintings for the "Blue Angels" Exhibition Team in Pensacola, Florida. Marion herself was a participant and competed in the "Power Puff Derby" Race 3 Times. She was an original member of the "Ninety Nines" Aviation Organization.
The 1972 Aviation Race traveled from San Carlos, California to Tom's River, New Jersey. We purchased this Pin/Pendant at an Estate in New Jersey many years ago and through research have found there is a connection that it most probably was originally owned by one of the Participants. 14K Gold Made Pins/Pendants were given to the Winners in Different categories in the Race and others made of Sterling Silver to all the other who flew the journey.
The " Powder Puff Derby " was a Nickname for the Women's Aviation Organization known as the " Ninety -Nines ". The Derby was an Annual Flying Event for Women that began in the earlier part of the 20th Century- as early as the Year 1929. Amelia Earhart-The Historical Pioneer of Women in Flight was one of the First Participants. This Transcontinental Air Race for Women came to an end in the Year 1977 due to Rising Fuel Cost-Diminished Corporate Sponsorship and most notably Air Traffic Safety and Congestion. Please Google/Research the "Powder Puff Derby" and you will see why this Pin is Very Historical in Aviation History.
The Pin has a roll over safety clasp as well as a bail so that it can also be worn as a necklace. The Pin weighs 7.5 Grams of 14K Yellow Gold. The weight of the Pin being noted We are trying as we have done many times in the past with items hoping someone will purchase this Rare item more for the Historical Value and not for the Gold weight. Way too many items in History get melted down for their Gold Scrap value. A similar Pin was once written about in the Antiques Collectors Weekly Publication- it seems it is Very Scarce.
The 14K Gold Pin/Pendant measures 1" Inch in Circumference.
The Blue/Gold Tone Hang Tag measures approximately 3/4" of an Inch x 3/8 Inch.
The 1972 PPD ( Powder Puff Derby ) Inscribed Hang Tag is not connected to the Pin but came with the Pin when we purchased it and can easily by attached by the Winning Bidder with the purchase of a hook/clasp and needle nose pliers.
Both the Pin and Hang Tag are in Very Good Condition with a few usage/storage wear scratches commensurate with age as well as some light tarnish.
